I have my very personal opinion about "IT'S GOOD TO BE UNHAPPY SOMETIMES.." and i want to write about it. Feel free to kick my testicles next time you see me if you disagree.
A few years ago ( 4 years ago approx ) I went through a frustrating moment of my life. I wasn't happy at all and mostly because of work. I was demotivated, not excited for what I was doing. Work, all of a sudden, became just "work", and not that beautiful "game" that I used to play almost every day in office. I felt lost.
So I decided to do something, something to heal from this kind of "disease". I started thinking about ideas for animated short films. I was convinced that the only medicine to fix my disease was to create something personal.
So, during the day I was animating in office and at night I was at home writing or drawing storyboards for new ideas.
To make this story short, one nights I came up with the idea of 3 astronauts on the moon, a violent monster, a forth astronaut hidden behind a rock, ecc...
I was totally convinced that the idea was just perfect and I was very proud of it so the day after I went to work ( I was working at Cinesite at that time) with the animatic in my USB key.
I showed it to Eamon Butler ( the great HOD of Cinesite Animation ) because I wanted to have some feedback from such an experience person he is, but honestly I must admit in my heart there was 0.1% of hope he would have offered me to make the short film at Cinesite.
A few days later Eamon offered me to make the short film at Cinesite. :-) I will talk about how we made BEANS another time.
What I wanted to say is that, if I wasn't going through a frustrating moment I wouldn't have spent time thinking about ideas for short films. I would have probably spent time to the pub, or more time with the family, or maybe I would have signed up to the local Gym and pushed up weights.
But I was unhappy, unsatisfied, frustrated, all these feelings gave me the motivation to spend time ( a lot ) at home trying to find a nice story that deserve to be narrated in animation.
Frustration, sometimes, can give you the motivation you need to do things ( good things ) that otherwise you would never even think about.
Just in case you've never seen the short film BEANS ( actually it's a fake commercial )you can watch it below ( please watch it with sound ).
